Missing and Murdered Women and Girls Project will honor the lives, legacies and increase awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and LGBTQ2S individuals.
Project activities will include:
- A Commemorative Gathering “Honoring the Lives of Our Sisters” and their families.
- A memorial mural dedicated to survivors, family members and community members of PEI’s Missing or Murdered.
- To capture the meaning behind this mural, a video was developed from each women to share their story.
- A creation of our MMIWG Toolkit: The purpose of the toolkit will contain the steps needed in order to assist families/community members when an Indigenous woman or girl goes missing. This toolkit will deliver the introduction to frontline workers,
- Hosting our Annual "Vigil Walk" and "Red Dress Day", honoring our stolen sisters and their families.
This project is a response to Survivors and family members of MMIWG in PEI having expressed an interest of having a gathering involving themselves and community members to commemorate victims of violence. During the commemoration event, a commemorative piece will be unveiled in a public area so that their loved ones and other Indigenous women who have gone missing can be remembered. We believe that this will also educate the public on the severity of MMIWG.
Funded by the Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, Department of Justice, Government of PEI and Health Canada.
